Joan grew up in Philadelphia, born into a family of Italian artisans. Her love of fashion blossomed at an early age. She began sewing clothing for her dolls from the fabric scraps that she collected. The Metropolitan Museum of Art features two of Joan's designs in their Permanent Collection of their Costume Institute, and she has even been installed in the Costume Collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Joan makes it a point to attend fabric shows in Paris twice a year. Her design inspiration comes from European fashion and couture fashion publications. Fine fabrication is extremely important to her, and her dresses are well-known for their exquisite fabric and detail, as well as pristine lines.
