Bridal Fashions From the 40's, 50's, & 60's

One of the best things about fashion is that once something "goes out of style," eventually time goes by and it's right back in again! The gowns that we sell in our wedding dress store in Miami have an elegant, timeless look about them, but the details within these designs often showcase a fashion feature that stands out and brands it as belonging to a certain time period.

David Abadi, owner of Brides of America, recently found some beautiful wedding photos of family and friends from the past, which he is sharing with us throughout today's blog. This got us to thinking about the different styles that brides seemed to prefer over the years, particularly the 40's, 50's, and 60's. According to David, "Lots of key elements from the wedding dresses of those decades are becoming popular again. I see them in many of the newest styles.

(Please note, there were no dates with the vintage photos, so they are not necessarily pictured next to the actual era they are from.)

The 1940's
This was during war time, so many women simply wore the best dress that they could afford at the time. The ones that were able to afford a bridal gown stuck to simple, modest styles. After the war, there was a boom in weddings when the troops got home, and wedding dresses started to become more stylized.

Gibson sleeves were very popular, which were long with a point at the end. High collars were often worn, and you might see netting at the neckline, or a slight sweetheart shape. A modest white or ivory was usually worn, or occasionally a beige.

The 1950's
Ballerina-length skirts, on both the brides and their bridesmaids, were all the rage in the 50's. As hemlines became shorter, so did the veil lengths. A fitted bodice with a full skirt was a favorite look, as well as the sweetheart neckline. Brides fell in love with this neckline when Elizabeth Taylor wore it in "Father of the Bride," and later when Grace Kelley wore it in her own wedding with a lace overlay. If a strapless gown was chosen, something, like a bolero jacket, was worn to cover the shoulders for the church ceremony.

The 1960's
Waistlines got higher in this decade, and veils continued to get shorter. Many brides wore a pillbox hat with a bouffant veil. Necklines stayed modest and still kept fairly high. An empire silhouette was a style many women chose. Some brides were bold enough to add a few metallic embellishments, and many were seen with floral embellishments.

Every wedding dress is different, but if you look closely enough, you can see similarities between many of them. Styles from the past, combined with modern influences, are what inspire designers to create the exquisite bridal gowns that you see in our online wedding dress store and in our Miami bridal boutique.

Look through some old wedding photos, either online or in your family albums, and see if you can spot special elements within those bridal gowns that you would still love to wear today. It's a fun and fashionable trip down memory lane! Once you are inspired, make an appointment to look through the gorgeous gowns at Brides of America to find your own look that will stand the test of time.

The gown of your dreams awaits you.

Red is the Popular New Color For Bridesmaids & Special Occasion Dresses

The color red seems to be making a huge comeback at Brides of America. Lately, many of the women planning weddings for 2018 are requesting red bridesmaid dresses. Our Miami bridal boutique is very excited about this because Morilee has some amazing special occasion gowns in this vibrant color for us to share with all of our customers.

As the fashionable Audrey Hepburn once said, "There is a shade of red for every woman." It is a magnificent color that always stands out in a crowd. Various shades of red increase enthusiasm, stimulate energy, and encourage confidence in the person wearing it.

Brides in India wear red bridal gowns instead of white. While most of the women that come into our Miami wedding dress store prefer to stick to white, ivory, and champagne shades for their wedding dresses, red is a very popular color to put on their bridesmaids. It can look amazing for a bright & fun summer wedding, a festive winter wedding, or a romantic ceremony near Valentine's Day. This color also works particularly well in fall color schemes and for a dramatic and formal evening wedding.

Another perfect special occasion that the color red fits into perfectly is a young woman's quinceanera celebration. We carry the most beautiful quinceaneara dresses in Miami, and the different styles look exquisite in red.

Bridesmaids aren't the only ones who are loving the color red lately! Recently Brides of America's owner, David Abadi, attended a wedding and noticed that almost 30% of the guests were wearing red dresses. We expect to be seeing a lot of this incredible shade everywhere in the coming months.

If you aren't quite ready to start through the best bridesmaid dresses in Miami, but instead are searching for your dream wedding dress, we've got some exciting news for you! Our Miami bridal boutique is hosting a Morilee Bridal Trunk Show July 7-24. You can call us at 305-620-6606 to schedule a time to come in and try on some of the amazing wedding dress styles that Morilee has created. Once you find that perfect bridal gown, then you can start thinking about those beautiful bridesmaid dresses.

Gorgeous Bridal Gown Accessories: Belts, Cap Sleeves, & Coverlets

Our wedding dress store in Miami carries an amazing selection of gorgeous bridal gowns that each look gorgeous without adding anything to them. In some cases, though, a bride wants to add to that fabulous look, making the dress a little more unique and bringing it closer to her own personal style. That's where the beautiful bridal accessories from Morilee that we carry at Brides of America come into play.

"Almost every bride that has come into the store recently has wanted to add a bridal accessory," says David Abadi, owner of Brides of America, "and I personally love it! It's like I am helping that bride to create a one-of-a-kind dress made especially for them."

Morilee's head designer, Madeline Gardner, has created a new collection of bridal accessories for their wedding dresses that not only look amazing, but they also match perfectly to all of the bridal gowns. Pearls, beads, and crystals are expertly placed to offer an exquisite look that enhances the already stunning dress style. These come in the forms of bridal belts, jackets, and cap sleeves, and this season detachable trains are also an option to add to your wedding day look.

Cap Sleeves, Coverlets, & Jackets
If you have chosen a wedding dress with a fantastic skirt and want to dress up the bodice a little more to go along with it, then one of these bridal accessories may be exactly what you need. Cap sleeves are a wonderful addition for any bride that falls in love with a strapless gown but prefers to have something on her shoulders. Coverlets work in much the same way, adding extra style to an otherwise bare shoulder and back.

Bridal jackets add even more coverage to a wedding dress bodice. They work beautifully for a plain top, offering an additional way to put a little more "wow" onto a simple design.

Bridal Belts
A bridal belt is an excellent way to emphasize the waist, often making you look taller and thinner. This makes for a very flattering look. Different styles of belts can dramatically change the look of the gown. According to David, "It is so much fun to watch a dress transform into a completely new look after we try out a few different belts." Among the gorgeous bridal belts in our collection, you will find a wide range of designs, widths, and materials used.

Make an appointment online to try on the amazing Morilee bridal gowns that we have for you in our Miami bridal boutique, or give us a call at 305-620-6606. Once we find your dream dress, you can give a few of these incredible bridal accessories a try to make it an even more special wedding day look that is all your own!

In addition to exquisite bridal gowns, we also carry the best bridesmaid dresses in South Florida. Our job is to make sure that every woman in your wedding looks and feels her fabulous best!

Once again, Madeline Gardner has done an amazing job of knowing what modern brides want for their wedding fashion. The new patterned sequin bridesmaid dresses from Morilee make up an exquisite collection of gowns that any woman would be thrilled to wear for any special occasion.

David Abadi, owner of Brides of America, had this to say about these incredible bridesmaid gowns. "This collection is totally different from what you normally see out there for bridesmaids. Not only are the ladies in the wedding party loving them, but the brides are in love with them too!

Tips To Encourage Great Toasts At Your Wedding

Most of the wedding planning decisions are made by the bride and groom, but one area that is partially out of your control is the toasts. You can decide who speaks, and for how long, but what your best man and maid of honor say are going to be a surprise to the both of you. Today, Brides of America has a few tips for you to share with the people that will be speaking at your wedding, plus a few great video examples that might give them some creative inspiration.

The key to a great wedding toast is sincerity, but if if can also entertain the guests along with the wedding couple, then that toast will be a happy and memorable part of the reception for everyone. Here are a few tips to share with your toast makers.
  • Make it personal...
but not too personal! Including details about how the couple met, how the toast maker met the couple, and funny stories about special moments leading up to the wedding are great subject matter. Do not include anything that is inappropriate for the guests in attendance, and don't mention past relationships or bash marriage in any way. Keep things positive.
  • Plan it into the timeline.
You can request that toasts are limited to a certain amount of time to keep the momentum of the reception flowing. Plan for them to take place when everyone has a drink in hand and before any guests have had too much to drink already. If your best man or maid of honor is planning something big (like in the videos below) they can tell you how long it will take without having to clue you in on any surprises.
  • Practice makes perfect.
Strongly suggest that your toast makers plan what they will be saying ahead of time rather than winging it, and that they practice their toast a few times in front of a mirror or in front of someone else.
  • Make sure everyone can hear it.
Get the guests' attention before beginning the toasts, and have the DJ give the toast maker a microphone so that everyone can hear. The person giving the toast should speak clearly and not rush through it.

Your best man and maid of honor simply need to speak from the heart. Some simple words about how special you are to them and a few good wishes for a happy future together are all that is needed for a great wedding toast. If you happen to have creative, talented friends that love to entertain a crowd, you may end up with something like this:

Some people aren't comfortable speaking in front of a crowd. Here is a perfect example of a toast that earns a standing ovation, but the man giving it doesn't have to say a word!

Another place to find toast inspiration is from popular TV shows, Late Night skits, current songs, or other pop culture references.

They can always enlist help, too. In addition to creating a personalized song for the wedding couple, this best man brings in a few friends to join him at about 3 minutes and 40 seconds into the video.

A great wedding toast can be a highlight to any reception and a wonderful memory to take home after the wedding. Great ceremony memories begin when you enter the wedding in your beautiful bridal gown. Choosing a dream dress is a wedding planning decision that you have total control over. Visit us at Brides of America in Miami, or order your wedding dress online through our website if you aren't in the South Florida area. We'll make sure your wedding day fashion is as special as you are!
