The History of a Popular Wedding Favor - The Jordan Almond

Recently here at Brides of America, a discussion began about popular wedding favors. The choices are endless, and the type of favor that a couple decides to give away depends greatly on their personal style, wedding theme, and favorite things. Traditionally, one of the most famous wedding favors is the Jordan Almond. We were curious why, and this is what we found out.

Wedding Favor History
Giving away favors to wedding guests is an extremely old tradition. As the story goes, many believe that the first wedding favors were seen at the weddings of European aristocrats. They would give a small trinket box made of crystal, porcelain, or precious stones, called a bonbonniere, that was filled with sugar cubes or other delicate confections. This was a symbol of wealth because, at that time, sugar was very expensive.

As sugar became more affordable and less of a status symbol, the treat was replaced with almonds. For centuries, the plain almonds signified well wishes meant for the bridegroom's new married life. During the 13th century, the almonds were coated with sugar and called "confetti." These were soon transformed to sugared almonds, and eventually became the candy-coated Jordan almonds we know today.

The Symbolism of the Almond
The bitterness of the almond combined with the sweetness of the coating is a metaphor for the bitter sweetness of marriage. While fairly popular here in the United States, this tradition is a staple in Italian, Greek, and Middle Eastern weddings.

Five is the common number of almonds to place inside a favor box to give to wedding guests at an Italian wedding. Using 5 is not random, but rather a significant number. Each almond represents a wish for the bride and groom: fertility, longevity, wealth, health, and happiness. In Middle Eastern wedding tradition, the Jordan almond is said to be an aphrodisiac.

At Greek weddings, sugar coated almonds are called "koufetta." They are put into little bags in odd numbers or served on a silver tray. The reasoning is that odd numbers are indivisible, just as the newlyweds should share everything and remain undivided. It is also a tradition/superstition that if an unmarried woman places one of these almonds under her pillow, she will dream of her future husband.

Other Popular Wedding Favors
If the Jordan almond isn't your idea of a fun wedding favor, there are lots of different things that you can use instead. The most important thing to remember is that it needs to be something useful, sentimental, or edible if you want your guests to take them home rather than leave them on the reception table.

One of our favorite places to find the most wonderful and unique wedding favors online is at WhereBridesGo.com. No matter what type of wedding you are planning, they have a wide variety of favors available, as well as many of the other items you will need for a beautiful ceremony and reception. They even carry the favor boxes and bags necessary if you decide to give away Jordan almonds.

Your After-the-Wedding To-Do List

You're married! Congratulations on hosting an incredible day that resulted in the beginning of your new "happily ever after" as Mr. and Mrs. That wedding planning to-do list is all checked off and long gone, but there are a few more tasks that will need to be taken care of now that the wedding is over. Brides of America has compiled these for you in today's blog.

Some of these need to be taken care of right away, and a few can be handled at a leisurely pace. The quicker you get them done, though, the more at ease your mind will be. Working together will make these tasks go by smoothly and quickly.

Return rented wedding items
Hopefully you assigned this job to someone responsible before the wedding and they took care of it already. Still, it's always wise to double-check that it is done. After all, you're the one that will owe more money if items are not returned.

Update your new last name.
If you have taken on a new last name at the ceremony, it also has to be done legally on paper. Everything that you signed up for when you were single will now need to be updated to feature your current name.

The process of name-changing can differ from state to state, but most will require you to provide a certified copy of your marriage license. Begin with the two big ones - your social security card and your driver's license. Next, take care of other documents, like car titles, bank accounts, credit cards, etc... After that, work on switching over any subscriptions, memberships, online profiles, and such.

Get Your Wedding Dress Professionally Cleaned
You probably won't be wearing this again any time soon, but possibly in the future for a vow renewal or to pass on to your daughter. The longer you wait to have it cleaned, the more likely that stains will set in. Don't try to clean it yourself. The delicate fabrics and intricate accents require the attention of a professional.

Before you send it away for cleaning, hang it up on a padded or plastic hanger, and do not wrap it in plastic. This can trap moisture and cause anything that has been spilled on the dress, as well as the oils from your body, to ruin the fabric. When choosing a dress cleaner, find someone that will also preserve your bridal gown so that you can store it safely until it is needed again.

Update your address
Unless you already lived together, at least one of you will be moving to a new address. Along with changing your name, make sure that your new address is correct on everything too (subscriptions, memberships, etc...) Don't forget to send out the information to all of your family and friends also. One way to do that is through the next task.

Write & mail the thank you notes
If you were writing these as gifts came in before the wedding, then you're a little bit ahead of the game. Most guests probably brought a gift with them to the ceremony and reception though, so you will have a mountain of thank you notes left to write. You should aim to have them all written and delivered by 3 months after the wedding date. Either set a day aside and tackle them together all at once, or work on a few every evening while you watch television together or talk over your day.

Return or exchange wedding gifts
You probably ended up with a few duplicate gifts, and possibly even a few things that you simply know you will not use. Make returns or exchanges soon after the wedding, because the longer you wait to do this, the more likely those gifts will get shoved to the back of a closet and forgotten about.

Pick out your favorite wedding photos
This is one more task that may never get done if you keep putting it off. Even if the photographer has given you digital copies of every photograph taken at the wedding, the longer you wait to print out your favorites, the less likely they will ever get printed. Make an effort to order at least a couple of the best ones to display in your home, and maybe a few to give away to immediate family.

You may not have need for our Miami bridal boutique immediately after your wedding, but know that we are here for you in the future. We have a beautiful selection of special occasion gowns available, plus gorgeous Quinceanera dresses for any daughters that may be in your future. Once again, congratulations from all of us here at Brides of America for your recent marriage. We wish you both many, many years of happiness together.

7 Wedding Planning Tips to Help You Stress Less

A lot of work and thought goes into planning a wedding.  The key to doing it all in a productive way is to avoid as much stress as possible.  Our wedding dress store in Miami will make sure that you are spoiled and treated like royalty while you are shopping for your wedding gown, but you've still got a lot to do after that task is complete.  Brides of America has a few tips to keep your stress levels at a minimum and hopefully help you to enjoy the entire wedding planning process along the way.

Work as a team.
It takes two people to make a marriage, and you should both have some input when you make the wedding too.  This is an event in honor of the two of you. Incorporating the things that both of you like will make for a better celebration, and sharing the tasks for making it happen will make for a much more relaxed couple. Use your vendors as teammates too.  You did your research and hired professionals that you trust, so use their advice.  It will help you to avoid a lot of easily-made mistakes.

Keep ideas & lists in one spot.
A wedding planning notebook is your new best friend.  It can be an actual notebook full of papers and notes to yourself, or a virtual one that you keep track of on your computer or tablet.  Whichever method is simplest for you, go with that.  Having all of your ideas, inspirations, appointments, checklists, etc... in one place saves you a lot of time.  This can help you to stay on track with your planning, and it's easy to grab & go when you head out to dress shop or meet with vendors.

Don't procrastinate.
Even though you may begin planning a year or more in advance, that wedding day will be here before you know it.  Don't push off completing tasks.  Putting them off doesn't make them any easier, but it does add to your stress later on when you begin running out of time.  If you find yourself with a little free time, pull out that wedding planning notebook and find a small item that can be done in the time that you have.  Call & schedule an appointment, narrow down your invitation choices, or add to the list of songs to be played.  Finishing these quick tasks will feel great and take away from what you have left on your to-do list.

Take time off.
If you spend an entire year living, breathing, thinking, and talking only weddings, it will slowly become a nuisance rather than a joy.  At least once a week, plan a non-wedding-related activity.  Go out for date night, sit on the couch and watch a movie marathon, or go for a walk in the park.  The only rule is that all wedding topics are off limits for a few hours.  After having a little fun, you'll be ready to tackle another section of your wedding planning checklist.

Avoid last-minute impulse buys.

This is the quickest way to go over-budget on a wedding.  Procrastination can cause you to rush around last-minute for this & that, often spending more because you are in a hurry and not looking at prices.  Also, those inexpensive favors you saw at the store that you think you have to have can add up quickly after you order a couple hundred of them.  Go home first, look over your budget, and decide if they are cute enough to fit into that budget.  Once you leave the store, they may not seem as important.  Out of sight, out of mind.  If you find yourself thinking back about them often, then make some room in your budget and go for it.

Do what makes you happy.
You will have a lot of people giving you their opinions.  After a while, all of the "...and this is how I would do it..." comments can really start to rub you the wrong way.  Slow down, take a deep breath, and remind yourself that they most likely meant well.  Let the advice in one ear, and if it's something you don't agree with, put it right back out of your head.  This is your day, not theirs, and the way that you want something to happen is the right way to do it.

Always remember to HAVE FUN!

A good friend of ours always says, "If you're not having fun, then you're doing it wrong!"  Your wedding should be one of the happiest days of your life.  There is absolutely no reason that the planning for it should be one of the worst times that you remember.  Keep in mind that this is all happening so that you can spend the rest of your life with someone that you truly love.  There's no better feeling than that.  Stay focused on that fact and let yourself have fun with the entire wedding planning process.

Wedding planning takes a lot of work and some stress will seep it's way in.  Follow the tips above and the amount of stress that you must endure will be greatly lessened.  Brides of America has been around through many weddings over the years.  If you are needing a little bit of help, ask away.  There's a good chance we may know the answer, and if not, then we can definitely point you in the direction of someone that does.  The best wedding dress store in Miami wants to make sure that you only have fond memories of everything involved with your wedding.

The gown of your dreams awaits you.

When to Start your Wedding Planning - A Checklist

He proposed!  Once the excitement calms down a bit, what do you do next?  A lot of details go into planning a wedding.  It can be overwhelming if you don't have a plan. The best wedding dress store in Miami has met many brides over the years, and we have seen what works, and what doesn't.  Brides of America has put together a list of some of the basic wedding planning tasks to get you started.

9-12 months before the wedding:

  • Announce your engagement!
    • It's time to share your excitement with everyone!
  • Begin a wedding notebook.
    • Whether it's a physical notebook or a digital one, find a way to keep track of all of your ideas and inspirations.  You'll see a lot of great ideas during your planning process, and this notebook will help you to narrow down your favorites.
  • Start a guest list.
    • The amount of people that you invite will determine where you can hold the wedding.  If you are inviting 300 guests, that tiny chapel up the street won't work.
  • Choose the venue &/or date.
    • If the venue is more important than the wedding date, you will have to choose from available dates on the venue's calendar.  If the date is more important to you, some venues may already be booked.  One will decide the other.
  • Decide on a budget.
    • Pick a number and stick to it as best you can.  Nothing can ruin the memory of a special day like a long list of bills afterwards that were impulse buys.
  • Ask your bridesmaids & groomsmen to be in the wedding.
    • If you love them enough to want them next to you while you say "I do," you'll want to give them plenty of time to make arrangements to be there.
  • Start looking for vendors.
    • If you have a particular vendor that you absolutely have to have for your wedding, book them right away.  Photographers and officiants book up quickly because they can only do one wedding a day.  You have more time to find bakers and florists because they can handle more than one event a day.

6-9 months before the wedding:

  • Order your wedding dress!
    • The sooner you make an appointment to try on bridal gowns, the sooner you will find that dream dress.  You will need plenty of time for it to be ordered and possibly altered once it comes in.  This is especially true if you are ordering your wedding dress online.  Don't forget to choose the extras once you have the dress:  veil, headpiece, shoes, jewelry, undergarments...
  • Pick out and order your bridesmaids' dresses.
    • These will also need to be ordered and possibly altered.
  • Send Save-the-Date cards.
    • This is only necessary if you are hosting your wedding out of town or near a holiday.  It will give everyone plenty of time to make arrangements to attend.
  • Begin looking at invitations.
    • This is another item that will need to be ordered, so the sooner you choose one the better.  They will still need to be addressed once they arrive.
  • Make a wedding website.
    • You don't have to have one of these, but in this day and age, it's the best way to get information to your guests easily and quickly.  It's also a wonderful way to share your story and engagement photos.
  • Book hotel blocks for out-of-town guests.
    • Most hotels will offer a discount to your guests if you reserve a set number of rooms.  Don't forget to make special arrangements for the two of you on the wedding night too!
  • Begin a list of songs for the reception and ceremony.
    • It's wise to also make a list of DO NOT PLAY songs if there are any you absolutely cannot stand.
  • Sign up for gifts registries.
    • Have fun with this!  Take a break from planning and make it a date night.

4-6 months before the wedding:
  • Finalize the guest list.
  • Order invitations.
  • Check the marriage license requirements for the county you are getting married in.
  • Pick out and order the men's attire.
  • Book a rehearsal dinner site.
  • Purchase anything that needs to be ordered.
    • favors, decorations, toasting glasses, etc...  If you are making any items yourself, start now!

3 months before the wedding:
  • Address wedding invitations.
  • If you are writing your own wedding vows, get them started.

1 month before the wedding:
  • Get the marriage license.
    • And keep it in a very safe place!
  • Make name changes on all documents.
    • driver's license, social security card, subscriptions, bills, etc...
  • Confirm details with all wedding vendors.
    • Make sure that everything you are expecting from them is happening.  1 month gives you plenty of time to make necessary changes.

2 weeks before the wedding:
  • Plan a schedule of events for the wedding weekend.
  • Give the final guest count to the caterer.

1 week before the wedding:
  • Confirm arrival times with all vendors.
  • Designate someone to return rental items after the wedding.

That may look like a lot at first glance, but if you take it one step at a time, it can all be done.  A wedding coordinator can take care of most of the tasks on this list for you and relieve a lot of wedding planning stress.  Brides of America knows the very best wedding vendors in Miami, and we are happy point you in the right direction.

The important thing to remember is to take everything one step at a time.  A good friend of ours always says, "If you're not having fun, then you're not doing it right!" Yes, it will take some work to get everything that you want accomplished, but don't forget to enjoy the process along the way.

One way to do that is to make an appointment at our Miami wedding dress store and spend a day letting us pamper you.  We will do everything that we can to make sure that the fashion portion of your wedding planning is special, enjoyable, and successful!

Vendor Spotlight - Events By Elle

The best wedding dress store in Miami is very aware of the fact that a LOT goes into the planning of a wedding.  Occasionally we like to spotlight the amazing vendors that help to make these special events incredible.  Today we are featuring the wonderfully talented Elle Becerra of Events By Elle.  This high-end wedding and event planner in Miami spends her time helping many couples enjoy the entire process of wedding planning, from start to finish.

Elle's photo by Michelle Citrin Studios                                                                wedding photo by Simply Captivating

Elle realizes that it's the little things that make the biggest difference.  The full-service coordination of Events By Elle delivers the most wonderful and memorable celebrations imaginable.  The experience is sure to be a memorable event for both you and your guests.

As the home page of her website states,

"The best thing about memories is making them.  We'll handle the rest."

Brides of America's owner, David Abadi, says, "The weddings that I have seen with Events By Elle's help are the most gorgeous, most organized weddings in Miami. We love Elle because she is as picky as I am about the tiniest details, and we both make sure the customer is our #1 priority."  David recently had a chance to talk to Elle, and this is what she had to say.

How did you first get involved with wedding and event planning?
According to my family, I've been doing this in some form my entire life!  From organizing bake sales to planning prom and working on student council activities, I have been doing some type of planning ever since I can remember.  At one point my dad asked me if I realized that people get paid to do this sort of thing and I could actually make a career out of it.  I sort of laughed it off at the time, but he was right!  I have now been involved in event planning for 6 years, and I opened my own company, Events By Elle, a little over 2 years ago.

What type of training did you receive?
I went to college at the University of Alabama for a major in Communications Studies and a minor in Public Relations.  Both of those are very helpful in this business, but I fell in love with event planning over a summer internship at a PR and event planning firm in Miami.  I thought that I would be more interested in the PR side of things, but once I got a chance to try my hand at the event planning side, I fell in love with it.

What is your favorite thing about this business?
Getting to help people truly enjoy the important moment they are celebrating is my favorite part.  I want to make sure that they have fun during the entire planning process in addition to the event itself.  I have met some great people along the way and formed some wonderful relationships.

What sets you apart from other companies?
I am often told that my clients greatly appreciate how calm I remain under pressure.  If anything unexpected happens, I make sure it is taken care quickly, calmly, and discreetly.  Also, I make sure that I am very accessible.  When someone calls or emails the company, I am the person they will talk to.

What have you noticed about weddings lately?
Many people aren't planning as far ahead as they used to. Rather than a year before the wedding, a lot of couples come to me a lot closer to the wedding date.  I had a 500-guest wedding that asked if I could help them plan a wedding in 3 months!  I told them, 'Of course!' and then we planned a very successful celebration!

Describe yourself in three words.
Elegant, grounded, and dedicated.

Do you have any interesting stories about an event?
I once worked a wedding that took place outdoors.  It began pouring rain, but the entire group of wedding guests kept partying all night long!  Those people had the most fun that I have ever seen a group have.

What is one thing that people may not know about being a wedding planner?
A lot of people see my team all dressed up at the event and assume that this job is just one great big party. What they don't see is how early we started, sometimes before 6 am, or how late we are there, often well past midnight.  It's a lot of work, but I truly love this job, and my team and I put our heart and soul and a lot of effort into every event that we plan so that it looks effortless.

Our bridal gown store in Miami highly recommends Events by Elle to all of the Florida brides out there.  Many people think that a wedding coordinator is an extravagance, but if you want to truly relax and have the time to enjoy your very special day, then a coordinator is a necessity.  Knowing that the details are being taken care of by a talented professional allows you to focus on the important part of the day - marrying the person you love!  When you visit us at Brides of America to find your dream wedding dress, we can tell you all about Elle and the other amazing vendors that we are honored to work with.

The Importance of Reading Vendor Reviews

We are the best wedding dress store in Miami because we treat all of our customers like the very important people that they are.  You can see the result of this royal treatment in our reviews written by the brides that have experienced buying a wedding dress from Brides of America.

Reading reviews from women that have used wedding vendors that you are considering can help you to avoid hiring the wrong person.  Just as a good review is encouraging, a bad review can steer you away from unprofessional vendors.  They may have some incredible photos on their website, but if they don't treat their customers right, they don't deserve to have a place in your wedding.

Brides of America always encourages our bride-to-be's to visit Wedding Wire and check out every vendor before getting involved with them.  "I believe a review is the best way to know if a vendor is legit, but not all reviews are real." states David Abadi.  "Wedding Wire monitors all of the reviews on their page so that you can be sure they are from a real bride."

We have been with Wedding Wire since 2009 because they are a company that has earned our trust.  According to David, "What I love about this amazing company (Wedding Wire) is that brides can express their experience there and other brides can see their true opinions.  It is the best place to be sure the vendors you will have in your wedding will take care of you and all of your wedding needs."

Wedding Wire has been very kind to Brides of America because of the high praise that we receive from many happy brides.  We have been awarded a Wedding Wire Award 7 years in a row!  As a wedding vendor, this lets us know that we are doing exactly what brides love.

David Abadi with our 2015 Wedding Wire Couple's Choice Award

It doesn't take a lot of time to check out a vendor that you are interested in, and that little bit of research can save you from a lot of unnecessary stress and wasted money.  Your wedding day should be filled with happiness, love, and laughter.

Our Miami wedding gown store makes sure that every one of our brides and all of the women that shop with us have a marvelous experience from the moment they step inside.  Brides of America knows how to treat our customers with the professionalism and care that they deserve, and all of your other vendors should too.
